SCOUTS ATTENDING CAMP GRIMES JULY 13
THROUGH JULY 19, 2008
With camp coming up on Sunday JULY 13TH it is time to
remind you of some important points that need attention so the
scouts can BE PREPARED for the experience. This list consists of
some rules, some do’s and don’ts, some suggestions, but as in all
scout outings the Scout Oath and the Scout Law
will rule and any violations will subject the scout to
actions taken by the leaders in camp. This is to be a fun and safe
experience for your boy. Any scout or scouts that try to change that
will be sent home at parent’s expense.
1. The address of Camp Grimes is: Camp Grimes, Youth’s
or Adult’s name and troop 49, 383 Vein Mountain Road, Nebo, NC,
28761. For any mail or packages sent to the boys during the week.
Send any packages early.
2. The emergency telephone number of the camp is
1-828-652-3923. This telephone is the only one in camp and
is located in the main office. There isn’t a pay phone in camp but
call this number in an emergency. The Ranger’s number is
828-652-8592.
3. No scout will be allowed to enter camp without a current
physical form (These are valid for three years) It must have
a signature of the parent or guardian each year to validate
that nothing has changed physically since the last visit to the MD.
This is the “Class 2” form filled out by an MD as this
is an outing over 72 hours. This has been an issue in some past
summer camps and a scout has had to sit in the office until an
appointment is made with a local MD for a physical (at the expense
of the parent) We do not want this to happen – any question on the
“Medical Form” ---CALL one of the leaders. Med Cards are
needed for prescription medication – see note below on this.
They tell the staff at Camp Grimes what exactly to do with your
son’s meds. Adults will need theirs as well.
4. Scouts will be required to travel in class A uniforms.
Class A uniforms are required for all gatherings at camp such as
meals, campfires. The TROOP T-SHIRTS will be needed for various
events. Part of the camp fee goes toward a customized camp t-shirt
which will be supplied on Sunday night.
5. No scout will be able to leave camp without the troop
leaders’ permission. This is for obvious reasons. Camp
requires a special form to be signed by the parents before this can
happen – so let us know.
6. In case of an emergency, make SURE that your boy or
one of the leaders has a telephone number of where you are going to
be if not at home. If going on vacation while your boy is at camp
make sure we know how to contact you. ie; uncle’s house,
grandmother’s house, etc. – put together an itinerary of your
stopping off places, hotel numbers and their phone numbers. It can
be of great importance in any event.
7. Medications brought to camp must be listed on a “Medication
Card” and will be administered by the Medical staff in camp.
The meds are to be taken on time by the scout. If the times are not
met the scout will receive a visit from the med officer – please
remind your boy to take his meds on time. This med card usually is
completed by your doctor with doses, number of pills/day, etc. If
you do this yourself – be very specific on your directions or they
will call you. These MED CARDS are available at the Troop meetings
or from Mr. Mokros or Mr. Wolf.
WHAT NOT TO BRING:
-
NO fireworks of any kind will be tolerated by Camp Grimes or
the troop. Period.

scout has his “Toten Chit”, a locking or folding knife is
fine. Sheath knives are considered dangerous and will not be
allowed.

NO firearms will be allowed –Firearms for the Rifle Shooting
& Shotgun Shooting Merit Badge will be available at camp. You will
be under the STRICT supervision of the camp Range Master during any
merit badge or free-time shooting.

NO alcohol – NO illegal drugs
-
NO pets.
-
NO ELECTONIC DEVICES – such as and not limited to:
Walkman, Discman, and gameboys. ANY found in camp will be
confiscated. If in Doubt DO NOT BRING IT!!!!!!!! Remember the scout
law: A scout is trustworthy.
-
NO CELL PHONES, NO CELL PHONES, NO CELL PHONES, NO CELL PHONES.
-
No Open toed shoes.
WHAT TO BRING:
-
A GOOD ATTITUDE. We will have a BLAST!!!!
-
Scout uniforms, Class A, Class B (any Shirt with BSA LOGO on
it)
-
Plenty of extra clothes We will be there a total of 6 days so
plan to bring t-shirts, “civilian” shorts, pants, socks, underwear…
At least one set per day would be good. Include one plastic garbage
bag to use for “dirty laundry”. Due to the fact that we usually find
a bag full of unidentified clothing every year – it would be wise to
put names on items. “Sharpies” pens work well for this.
-
ONE PAIR OF LONG PANTS & ONE LONG SLEEVE SHIRT & ONE PAIR OF TIE
SHOES for the swimming merit badge. Nylon pants and a button up
dress shirt work best.
-
Rain Gear – Coat & Pants, or Poncho, or umbrella, etc. ALL
the events go on even in the rain…be prepared for this to happen.
-
Basic “toiletries” such as a bar of soap, toothpaste,
toothbrush, bath towel, etc. Please include instructions for your
scout on “how to use these”. New state-of-the-art showers are
available everyday for the boys to use.
-
Good Walking shoes, plus an extra pair for when the other pair
gets wet. The terrain is rough there and there are no sidewalks.
Open toe sandals usually result in cuts, bruises, stubbed toes,
twisted ankles, and won’t be allowed.
-
Sweat Shirt or Light Jackets come in handy, as nights get
cool around the campfires.
-
Camera & Film – great scenery on the river, sunsets, etc.
(under water “single use” cameras worked well on the float trips and
for some real neat shots.)
-
Pump Bug spray
-
Sleeping Bag or Equivalent blankets and/ or a pillow. Cots
are supplied; air mattresses are also good.
-
Compass, Boy Scout Hand Book, A
good book or good magazine.
-
Flash Light, pencil / pen, notebook for merit badge classes,
letter writing, etc. We do have “mail call “ daily.
-
Spending money for free times. They have a great Camp Store
there. Most boys buy a T-shirt or other momentos. There are snacks
there as well, soda, ice cream, pizza etc. Remember that it is the
scout’s responsibility to watch his valuables. “A Scout is Honest”
-
Some Merit Badges require a “kit” or some materials that must
be purchased at the camp store. Please be prepared for this event.
They don’t cost a lot but are needed to complete the merit badge in
camp.
-
Order of the Arrow members bring your sash.
-
Our troop’s week theme is “Hawaiian Luau”. We’ve got some older
boys working on decorations for the campsite and will have our Luau
one night. We’ll invite staff and others for some big island fun.
Please bring any Hawaiian attire (check deep in the closets!)
-
Please also help the troop by participating in the Theme days at
camp:
Monday – camp t-shirt day (provided as part of your fee) Tuesday – Hat day (easy one) Wednesday – Sunglasses day Thursday – Troop t-shirt day (we’ll wear the blue ones) Friday – Patriotic day (bring red, white, & blue clothing, we’ll
bring some flags)

Some final bits of info:
$5 will be collected on Sunday for lunch on the return trip home.
This prevents the boys from mysteriously “running out of money” by
the end of the week. We’ll keep their final $5 for them.
MEET 10:00 AM, SUNDAY, JULY 13TH AT THE Buck Wild restaurant, (Just
¼ mile west on highway 49 from Back Creek Church Road.)
We will return Saturday, July 19, to Back Creek Church after lunch.
As usual, your boys will call when we get there.
Wear your blue Troop 49 shirts on Sunday. If you do not have one or
need an extra one, Barry Douthitt will have them for sale at Tuesday
night’s meeting AND Sunday at the restaurant parking lot for a
whopping $6 each.
Bring your class A uniform shirt on a hanger Sunday. We will hang
these in the trailer and will need them shortly after we get to
Grimes for the troop picture.
Thank you for trusting us with your boy for the week and if you have
any questions, don’t hesitate to call!
